Henrique dos Santos Viana (born June 29, 1936 in Lisbon , † July 4, 2007 there ) was a Portuguese actor.

Life

Until 1968 - the beginnings

Viana attended the commercial school Escola Industrial Fonseca Benevides and began acting as an amateur in 1957, in the theater group Grupo Dramático da Sociedade de Instrução Guilherme Cossoul . He appeared on stage for the first time in the play Amanhã Há Récita by Varela Silva , who also directed his play. A variety of roles followed there.

In 1959 he enrolled at the National Conservatory Conservatório Nacional (today Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema ) and at the same time began as an intern at the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II . Here he was on stage for the first time in 1959, in Bernardo Santarenos O Lugre (German: The Siskin , directed by Pedro Lemos). This was followed by a number of roles in the Teatro Nacional, including in A Visita da Velha Senhora , Luca de Tena's staging of Dürrenmatt's tragic comedy The Visit of the Old Lady . He broke his studies at the Conservatório Nacional and then became a professional actor. In 1962 he moved to the Teatro Avenida, where he turned to the boulevard theater . In 1967 he switched to revue theater with the play Sete Colinas (German: Seven Hills). In 1968 he played in O Porteiro , Jorge Listopad's production of Harold Pinter's play Der Hausmeister .

1969 to 1990 - stage successes and cinema career

From 1969 he was at the Teatro da Estufa Fria before moving to Raul Solnados Teatro Villaret in 1971 . Here he starred in a number of plays, including Molières Tartufo (directed by Adolfo Marsilach) and in Ray Cooney's O Vison Voador , one of the Teatro Villaret's greatest audiences (with Raul Solnado, directed by Paulo Renato).

In 1973 he went to the Teatro ABC and thus returned to the revue theater. In 1974 he was a co-founder of the Adoque, where he appeared on stage in a number of revues. In 1977 he also appeared as an author for the first time, with the revue Ó Calinas Cala a Boca (English: Man Calinas, shut up), which he wrote together with Ary dos Santos , Francisco Nicholson and Gonsalves Preto. He also recorded two singles with pieces of the popular lead role of Calinas, which he played. He also began to stage plays himself, including two pieces by the Adoque youth theater.

In 1981 he interrupted his work at the Adoque to work with u. a. Raul Solnado and Fernando Tordo . In 1982 he returned to the Adoque, to its last revue before it closed its doors on the central Martim Moniz Square. Viana played in various theaters (Teatro Variedades, Teatro ABC, Teatro Maria Matos) during the 80s, where he did comedies and revues as well as serious plays. At the same time, he repeatedly appeared in telenovelas and theater recordings on Portuguese television.

His presence in Portuguese cinema , which had already begun in 1963, also began to develop more strongly , especially with the artistic turnaround after the Carnation Revolution in 1974. Especially in the 1980s he was in demand as a convincing character actor in demanding Portuguese film productions.

From 1990 until death - television

After a number of revue pieces and musicals, u. a. by Carlos Cruz , he played in Júlio Dantas ' A Severa in 1990 , staged by Nicolau Breyner , in order to devote himself largely to serious plays from 1991 onwards. In 1992 he was on a theater stage for the last time, in the Convento de S.Francisco monastery in Portalegre , in António Ferreira's classic A Castro . After that, he largely switched to television productions. In the 2000s in particular, he appeared in numerous telenovelas, television films and crime series. In 2005 he went to Brazil for the first time for a television production, for the Portuguese-Brazilian co-production ( O Segredo ). He returned there in 2006 for the telenovela Paixões Proibidas , a co-production of the Portuguese RTP and the Brazilian BAND .

Henrique Viana died of cancer on July 4, 2007 in Hospital Santo António dos Capuchos . He was buried in the Cemitério dos Olivais cemetery.

reception

While he was a crowd favorite on stage in mostly comical or popular roles, he was later in demand in the cinema as a convincing actor of strong personalities and many villains. Here he shone less in leading roles than in expressive characters who acted alongside the main characters and provided the films with a lot of persuasive power. For this reason he was at times one of the busiest film actors in Portuguese filmmaking. He was also discovered on television, especially in the 1980s, where his presence gave the productions persuasive power. Despite a few international engagements, including a German film with Peter Lilienthal in 1983, Viana's career remained largely limited to Portugal.
