Leonel Eduardo Barril Vieira (born June 19, 1969 in Miranda do Douro ) is a Portuguese film director and producer .

Career

He moved to Porto in 1986 to study design. In 1990 he broke off his studies and went to the Escuela Superior de Artes y Espectaculos TAI in Madrid , where he completed his film studies in 1992. After working with Pedro M. Ozes independent film Sueño de Fortuna as a student in Madrid (set), he made his first film, A Sombra dos Abutres ("The Shadow of the Vultures") on his return to Portugal . However, after the success to publish it he succeeded in his second film, Zona J . Named after a problem area in the Chelas district of Lisbon , the film was a box office success, thanks in part to a successful advertising campaign by the television channel SIC .

He went to Brazil in 2002 for his film adaptation of Ferreira de Castro's novel A Selva (Eng. Title: "The rubber tappers") and also worked with Brazilian actors to give the film a larger market. In 2008 he shot the official video for the single Rosa Branca by the fado singer Mariza . He shot his cult film- like action comedy Arte de Roubar ("The Art of Stealing") in the same year with Portuguese actors, but entirely in the original English language.

He achieved his greatest commercial success to date with humorous remakes of popular comedies of Portuguese cinema of the 1930s and 40s, adapted to today's Portugal . In 2015, Vieira's remakes of O Pátio das Cantigas and O Leão da Estrela had already been released, which became the biggest box-office hits in Portuguese cinema since 2004. A new edition of A Canção de Lisboa will conclude the trilogy in 2016.

Since 2003, Vieira has developed a lively activity as a producer parallel to his directorial work, especially in Portugal and Brazil.

reception

Vieira is not one of the Portuguese auteur filmmakers of his generation, but, like Fernando Fragata , orientates himself on public films, with some success (3 films among the 40 most-watched Portuguese films since 2004). The critics attested his films technical skill, but also weaknesses in the scripts and not always fully convincing actors. His versatile work is characterized by ingenuity and creativity, and the urge to make films for a wide audience that also meet some cinematic standards.
