Memories of the Yellow House (orig .: Recordações da Casa Amarela ) is a Portuguese film by the director João César Monteiro from 1989.

action

The slowly getting older João de Deus, plagued by health problems and living in modest circumstances, lives in a small guesthouse to sublet. His passions are Viennese classical music , Benfica Lisbon , and the landlady's daughter, whose pubic hair he collects after her baths. Lonely, penniless and opportunistic, he takes advantage of the death of a prostitute who confides in him and seizes her savings. He becomes cocky and rapes the landlady's adored daughter when she refuses him. He then finds himself homeless. After further confusing appearances, he is admitted to an institution for the mentally ill. There he meets an old friend who helps him escape.

reception

In his film, João César Monteiro shows a Lisbon with charming alleys, lovable people and dilapidated houses, but also a hypocritical society and people on the fringes who struggle to maintain their dignity. Its provocative humor and taboo-touching satire are an integral part of the film, along with the imaginative camera angles and the calm, observant atmosphere. With this film he introduced the character of João de Deus, played by himself, who would appear again in his next films as a grotesque distorting mirror of the various human characteristics.

The film caught the attention of cineastes and received praise from critics (including the Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale in 1989). It became Monteiro's most famous work.
