João Mário Lourenço Bagão Grilo (* 1958 in Figueira da Foz ) is a Portuguese film director .

Career

As a student at the grammar school in Figueira da Foz, he made his first Super 8 films and has attended the annual international film festival in his hometown since he was 15. During his subsequent studies in economics at the University of Coimbra , he was active in film clubs and, from 1976–1977, led an academic film study group. In 1978 he submitted a project for a Super 8 feature film to the national film funding institute Instituto Português de Cinema (IPC, now the Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual ) and received the first state funding for this format in Portugal. After the IPC recognized the quality of the film ("Maria"), it subsequently promoted the formatting of the film to 16 mm.

Grilo then dropped out of his studies in Coimbra and began studying sociology at the ISCTE University in Lisbon. Around the same time he became a film critic for the newspaper Jornal de Letras and made his second feature film, A Estrangeira ("The Stranger", 1982). His third film, O Processo do Rei ("The Trial of the King", 1990) with Eduardo Serra's camera , received praise from the critics, especially for its successful composition, which in the historical plot of the forced deposition of King Alfonso VI. (1667) based on the paintings of the time.

In parallel to his directorial work, Grilo also received recognition for his academic work. He received his doctorate from the New University of Lisbon with a thesis on "The Order in Film" (published in 1993) and, as part of his teaching activities at the university, is particularly interested in the interdisciplinary research area " New Media " / " Social Media " and the "Film Philosophy" involved. In addition, he maintained a weekly column in the Visão magazine for years , in which he went public with in-depth criticism of capitalism and social criticism .

reception

His films have been shown at various festivals (including Berlinale , Locarno Film Festival , Caminhos do Cinema Português in Coimbra, Venice Film Festival , TIFF Toronto ) and have received several awards. His work received critical attention but not the public. His films are characterized by great accuracy, severity and seriousness, and almost completely lack audience-appeal humor and love stories. His work is recognized among film buffs , including internationally. In his recognized academic work, he also mostly deals with the subject of film and new media. In spite of all further developments, it stands directly in the tradition of the Novo Cinema and its demanding conception of film and its social task apart from commercial aspects.
