Antonio Ferreira

António Ferreira (* 1528 in Lisbon ; † November 29, 1569 there ) was a Portuguese poet and playwright .

Life

Ferreira graduated from Coimbra University and lived as a civil servant in Lisbon, where he died of the plague . In terms of training and attitude, Ferreira was a humanist . He followed the Italian style of Francisco de Sá de Miranda and stood up for the classical authors. His poems, which appeared only after Ferreira's death, appealed to both the mind and the emotions. Ferreira's masterpiece was “A Castro”, a tragedy about Prince Pedro's love for Ines de Castro and their assassination (1355) by the Prince's father, Alfonso IV. The tragedy follows a Greek model and conveys psychological tension. Ferreira also wrote two prose comedies.
