Johannes Rulle, 40th Abbot of Marienfeld

Johannes Rulle SOCist (* 1642 in Münster ; † October 15, 1713 ) was a Cistercian and abbot of the Marienfeld Monastery .

Life

At the age of 21 Johannes Rulle entered the order of the Cistercians in Marienfeld. In 1687 Rulle took over the office of dean in Harsewinkel and held it for 18 years. The Marienfeld convent, under the direction of the Hardehausener abbot Stephan Overgaer, then elected Johannes Rulle as the 40th abbot in 1705. He was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Johann Peter von Quentell from Münster. Abbots Stephan Overgaer from Hardehausen and Gregor Waltmann from Liesborn assisted . According to legend, Abbot Rulle was murdered on October 15, 1713. He found his final resting place in the chapter house next to his predecessors and fellow novices.

Sagas

Abbot Rulle is the Marienfeld abbot who lives on in the vernacular. A legend reports: When his predecessor, Abbot Cuelmann , died in 1705 , the monks could not choose a new abbot. They wanted a mild abbot. When Rulle was elected abbot, however, he was strict. As a result , he was murdered from behind in 1713 on one of the colonies . After the burial, however, he found no rest in the grave. The monks complained to the new abbot Gallenkamp that they were disturbed by the deceased abbot while praying. Abbot Rulle was then reburied in front of an outside crucifixion group, but this did not bring any improvement. He was now disturbing the people who went to the chapel on Sunday mornings. Then Rulle was reburied in the heather and is now up to mischief there.

Another story reports that the body of Abbot Rulle disappeared on a cart with six horses in the so-called Teufelskuhle (remains of former fish ponds). Horrible ghost figures have since emerged from the pit at night. An attempt to fence in the hollow afterwards had no effect; the next morning everything was broken.
