Bernardus Cuelmann, 39th Abbot of Marienfeld

Bernardus Cuelmann SOCist (* 1643 in Beckum or Münster , † January 14, 1705 ) was a Cistercian and abbot of the Marienfeld Monastery .

Life

Bernardus Cuelmann was born in Beckum or Münster; the sources disagree on this. In 1663 he joined the Marienfeld Abbey with his successor Johannes Rulle . After the death of Johannes Stades in 1681, Cuelmann was elected abbot by the convent of the monastery in November of the same year. On November 17, 1681, the consecration took place in the mother monastery Hardehausen by the Münster auxiliary bishop Nikolaus , titular bishop of Titiopolitanum. During his tenure, 22 brothers were accepted into the order, but one of them was dismissed. Abbot Cuelmann died on January 14, 1705 and was then buried in the chapter house of the Marienfeld monastery. Because of his many construction activities in Marienfeld, he left some debts to his successor.

Construction activity

In the course of Abbot Cuelmann's tenure, it turned out that Johan Adam Reineking's existing organ was in poor condition. So Cuelmann had it extensively restored in 1690/91. In 1693 the Catharine altar was repainted. The construction of the new high altar began under Caesem's predecessor. In 1694 it was painted with precious colors. That is why the coat of arms of Abbot Cuelmann is still on the baroque high altar. In 1695 there was a crack in the little bell in the tower. That is why Cuelmann had the bell re-cast by Johan Fricke in Gütersloh . In the following years, Cuelmann had the dilapidated buildings of the monastery torn down. Since the previous abbey was also there, a new building had to be built. From 1699 to 1702, Cuelmann had the abbey building erected at the place where the court of justice used to stand, namely to the west of the abbey church. On February 28, 1699, a contract was signed with master mason Gert Affhüppe for this purpose. It is not possible to exactly reconstruct who the architect of this building is.
