Johannes Stades (* 1610 in Coesfeld ; † November 6, 1681 ) was a priest and abbot of the Marienfeld monastery .

Life

Johannes Stades entered the Marienfeld Monastery with three confreres in 1647. On May 7, 1661, the Marienfeld convent elected him 38th Abbot of Marienfeld . The Münster bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen donated the abbot's benediction in the Telgter pilgrimage chapel. During his tenure, 38 confreres and 2 lay friars joined the order. Abbot Johannes Stades died on November 6th, 1681. He found his final resting place in the now demolished chapter house.

Construction activity

In 1672 Abbot Johannes had a building similar to a monastery built in Warendorf . On the upper floor there are 14 cells for monks. This building was designed in case the monks from Marienfeld had to seek refuge in Warendorf.

The most important change that Abbot Johannes Stades carried out in the Marienfeld Monastery was certainly the demolition of the Marienfeld Altar from 1457. According to chronicler Hermann Hartmann, this happened at the urging of Prince-Bishop Ferdinand II von Fürstenberg . On Ferdinand's recommendation, his court painter Johann Georg Rudolphi from Brakel was commissioned to design a new altar, which the lay brother Johan Bröckelmann von Beckum carried out in 1681. The four interchangeable oil paintings for this new high altar were created by the painter F. Barckey. In the predella , the relics of St. Ursula and her companions, who were already resting in the previous altar.
