Jodocus Caesem, 37th Abbot of Marienfeld

Jodocus Caesem SOCist (* in Münster ; † May 7, 1664 ) was a German Catholic priest and abbot of the Marienfeld monastery .

Life

Jodocus Caesem was born in Münster and entered the Marienfeld monastery in 1630. His twin brother Rochus entered the Minorite Order in Münster in 1632. From 1645 to 1651 he was Guardian in Duisburg, then until 1664 Guardian in Münster.

In 1646 Jodocus Caesem was elected abbot by the Marienfeld convent. After a five-year term in office, he and all his successors in the office of Abbot of Marienfeld were given permission to wear the miter from now on . Johannes von Blankenberg, abbot of Altenberg Abbey and general of the order, granted permission at the same time to the abbots of Hardehausen and Bredelar . In 1661 Caesem resigned as abbot. During his tenure, 28 brothers were accepted into the convent; including four lay brothers. However, four brothers had to be released.

Jodocus Caesem died on May 7, 1664 and, as was customary for the abbot, was buried in the chapter house .

Construction activity

Several construction activities are ascribed to Abbot Jodocus Caesem. Since the roof of the monastery church was only partially covered with lead , he had the entire church re-covered with lead. The church's small bell also had to be re-cast. Inside the church, he had some smaller ones removed from the existing 25 altars. Furthermore, the rood screen of the lay brothers was removed and taken to the Hardehausen mother monastery. Of the other monastery buildings, the west wing was very dilapidated. Caesem had it torn down and replaced with a more magnificent and slightly taller new building within just three years. Then the south wing could be tackled and renewed up to the middle. He also had the cloister partially demolished and rebuilt.
