Stephan Overgaer SOCist (* around 1627 in Beckum ; † January 2, 1713 in Hardehausen ) was a priest and abbot of the Hardehausen monastery .

Life

Stephan Overgaer was born around 1627 on the inheritance of Overgahr (Hinteler peasantry, Beckum parish ) belonging to the Marienfeld monastery . On May 1, 1645 he became a student at the Theodorianum in Paderborn . This was followed on September 22, 1657 as a pastor in Scherfede .

On July 30, 1675 he was elected abbot of the Hardehausen monastery . He held this office until his death. He brought the monastery to a new bloom through reforms and building activity. Many of the monastery buildings in Hardehausen that are preserved today were built under his leadership. From 1680 to 1693 he also had the Warburger Mönchehof extensively rebuilt and in 1683 a new tithe barn was built in Scherfede .

In 1705 he assisted the auxiliary bishop of the diocese of Münzer , Johann Peter von Quentell, in the ordination of Johannes Rulle as abbot of the Marienfeld monastery .

Overgaer is considered the discoverer of Germeter healing springs after he had stated in 1679 that "one in Germete acidulous springs from the earth, for very many sufferings of the abdomen an excellent remedy was".

Honors

  • The Hardehausen Monastery, which today houses the “Anton Heinen” rural adult education center, is located on “Abt-Overgaer-Straße”.
  • The secondary school in Rimbeck is also named after him.
