The young Russian immigrant Liza is married to Vítor, a petty criminal who tries to ensure a regular family life. When his Spanish ex-wife Fernanda comes back to Portugal, her gang takes quarters with him to run a passport forger ring together. Her house near the water in a shabby neighborhood on the Margem Sul is now becoming a meeting place for illegal immigrants from all over the world. Liza begins a relationship with the Ukrainian Andrei, who meanwhile wants to escape the conditions with her son, while Vítor cannot choose between his quiet wife and the extroverted ex-wife. Finally, the situation comes to a head when Liza and Vítor learn about each other's relationship, and the gang is targeted by the Russian mafia and the Portuguese authorities.

América is Pinto's first full-length feature film. It shows both dramatic and emotional moments, as well as elements of black humor .

The film premiered on November 15, 2010 at the Huelva Latin American Film Festival and was released in Portuguese cinemas on May 26, 2011. It has screened at various film festivals, including the Festival do Rio , the International Film Festival of India , the IndieLisboa , the film festivals of Sofia , Huelva and São Paulo , and the Caminhos do Cinema Português in Coimbra , where the film received an award. The film was also awarded at the Globos de Ouro 2012 .

The ones from Good Bye Lenin! well-known Chulpan Khamatova had her first role in Portuguese film here . The popular Raul Solnado had his last film role here and died after filming.

In 2011 the film was released on DVD in Portugal by ZON / Lusomundo.
