The Elevador de Santa Justa , also known as Elevador do Carmo , is a passenger elevator that connects the Baixa district with the Chiado district in the city center of Lisbon . The striking steel structure was built in 1902 according to plans by the engineer Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard . The original drive was a steam engine, but this was replaced by electric motors in 1907.
The elevator is 45 m high and has two cabins, originally decorated with wood and fitted with glass panes and brass fittings, each with a capacity of 24 people. The two original lift machines can be seen in operation one floor above the upper exit. Another floor above is a café with a spectacular view over the city: Baixa, Chiado, Castelo de São Jorge .
Years of construction work at the upper exit prevented the way to the Baixa district. The building was only used as a viewing platform at this time. Since the connecting bridge was reopened in December 2005, it can be used again in the original sense.
