The Teatro Avenida is a theater in the Montserrat district of the Argentine capital Buenos Aires .

description

The Teatro Avenida opened in 1908 on Avenida de Mayo with a play by Lope de Vega . The director was María Guerrero , a Spanish theater director who popularized classical drama in Argentina. The Teatro Avenida became the focus for Spanish theater in Buenos Aires after the Teatro Cervantes was made the National Comedy Theater in 1933 and became known for its operettas and zarzuelas , but also for special events such as the performance of the Aida for the benefit of Spanish charities based on the Spanish Civil war . On March 8, 1945, the Catalan actress Margarita Xirgu appeared in the world premiere of Bernarda Alba's house by Federico García Lorca at the Teatro Avenida.

From 1960 interest in Spanish theater literature decreased and the Teatro Avenida turned to the production of Broadway plays. The 1963 production of Cole Porter's Kiss Me, Kate was a success. However, the repertoire was very diverse and in 1967, for example, Giuseppe Verdi's La traviata was performed. A few years later the theater was bought by the Argentine impresario Faustino García, who brought back the Spanish director Moreno Torroba in 1970. In the 1970s, the Zarzuela at the Teatro Avenida also experienced a revival.

The 1976 military coup led to a decline in theatrical culture in the country and in 1977 the Teatro Avenida was closed. In 1979 a fire nearly destroyed the building and it did not reopen until June 19, 1994. Today it is operated by the non-governmental organization Buenos Aires Lírica , with a focus on classical opera.
