María Guerrero

María Guerrero Torija (born April 17, 1867 in Madrid , † January 23, 1928 there ) was a Spanish actress.

Life

She studied acting with Teodora Lamadrid and made her debut in 1885. She had great success as a leading actress in classical plays from the Golden Age and in contemporary works by José Echegaray . She later studied with the actor and director Benoît-Constant Coquelin in Paris , where she performed with Sarah Bernhardt .

She married the actor Fernando Díaz de Mendoza y Aguado, an impoverished Spanish grandee , with whom she founded her own company. The company was very successful in both Spain and Buenos Aires , Argentina, where it moved in 1897. She later returned to Madrid, where she died on January 23, 1928.

In Madrid today a theater is named after her, the Teatro María Guerrero , which is one of the two theaters of the Centro Dramático Nacional .

María Guerrero was the grandmother of the actor Fernando Fernán Gómez .
