The Centro Dramático Nacional (CDN) is a public center for theater productions in Spain . It is subordinate to the National Institute for Performing Arts and Music, an independent body of the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport in Madrid . The CDN has two stages, the Teatro María Guerrero and the Teatro Valle-Inclán , both in Madrid.

history

The CDN was founded in 1978 on the initiative of director Adolfo Marsillach with the aim of bringing contemporary theater closer to the public - especially Spanish works. It helped a number of important Spanish authors to get their works performed. Among them are established playwrights such as Ramón María del Valle-Inclán , Fernando Arrabal , Federico García Lorca and Max Aub , but also young 21st century authors such as Juan Mayorga , Ignacio García May , Pedro Manuel Víllora , Alfredo Sanzol , Lluïsa Cunillé , Laila Ripoll , Raúl Hernández Garrido , Albert Espinosa , Rodrigo García and Angélica Liddell .

Performance practice

The CDN has an ongoing program on its two stages and tours in Spain and worldwide. It was also increasingly open to foreign authors: classics such as Henrik Ibsen , Arthur Miller , Bertolt Brecht , Jean Genet , Eduardo De Filippo , Georg Büchner , Thomas Bernhard and Tennessee Williams ; modern authors such as Bernard-Marie Koltès , Tom Stoppard , Martin Crimp , Guy Foissy and Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt .

The CDN editing committee selects the works to be included in the program. This committee also reads and examines works by Spanish dramatists that are little or not known to the public in order to have them performed if necessary. Prominent Spanish cultural workers were and still are involved in this committee, among them Ana Diosdado , Jerónimo López Mozo , José María Pou and Javier García Yagüe .

In addition to its own productions and co-productions, the CDN also opens its stages to guest performances. Its theaters hosted performances at the Madrid Autumn Festival. Since the 2009–2010 season, it has presented works by outstanding international directors in its Una mirada al mundo program . The first two episodes featured productions by Thomas Ostermeier , Wajdi Mouawad , Guy Cassiers , Romeo Castellucci and Tim Robbins .
