Angélica Liddell
Angélica Liddell (* 1966 in Figueres ) is a Spanish performance artist and theater director .
Life
She studied Psychology at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and Dramaturgy at the Real Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático. Since 1993 she has been the initiator and member of the dance, theater and performance group Atra Bilis Teatro . Liddell herself works there as both a director and an actress.
The invitation to the Avignon Festival in 2009 marked her breakthrough to international importance beyond insider circles. At the Berlin theater festival Foreign Affairs 2015 she was the focus of the festival with two different guest performances, a solo performance and an author reading.
Content
“Personal, social and political violence” is the main theme in Angélica Liddell's theatrical works. For example, in the three-part work El tríptico de la aflicción, the traditional family structure is criticized as a place of brutality, violence and danger, from which, as socially determined, there seems to be no escape. In doing so, she primarily relies on experimental and avant-garde forms of theater, which often have a certain shock effect on the viewer. The unconventional and provocative handling of reality and its transformation onto the stage is a main characteristic in all of her works.
In her performances, it always came back to self-harm , making them programmatically in the vicinity of other performance artists engaged as Marina Abramovic , Gina Pane and Franko B . Associations with Artaud's Theater of Cruelty can also be found in the reviews.
In addition to the recurring use of razor blades with which she injured herself, in the performance Acción, for example, she “set in concrete” her feet up to the ankles to illustrate how social conventions function as “blocks on the leg”. The attending visitors were asked to label the blocks with their own words.
In one of her texts, Liddell makes the programmatic statement: “No quiero tener hijos. / Es mi manera de protestar. Mi cuerpo es mi protesta. / Mi cuerpo renuncia a la fertilidad. / Mi cuerpo es mi protesta contra la sociedad, contra la injusticia, contra el linchamiento, contra la guerra. / Mi cuerpo es la crítica y el compromiso con el dolor humano. / Quiero que mi cuerpo sea estéril como mi sufrimiento. ”(For example:“ I don't want children. / This is my way of protest. My body is my protest. / My body is failing fertility. / My body is my protest against society, against injustice, against lynching, against war. / My body is criticism and confrontation with human suffering. / My body should be as sterile as my pain. ")
