Ribeirinho

Ribeirinho , actually Francisco Carlos Lopes Ribeiro , (born September 21, 1911 in Lisbon , † February 7, 1984 ibid) was a Portuguese actor and film director .

Career

He was born as the younger brother of the future director António Lopes Ribeiro in the Lapa district in Lisbon. At the age of five he was on a theater stage for the first time, in Linda-a-Velha . He played theater from then on, and in 1935 began to direct plays himself. He first appeared in front of the camera for his brother in 1937. He often played in the revues in Lisbon, which were popular at the time , where he was particularly successful as a comic actor. This continued in his film career, which brought him considerable fame, especially in the successful comedies of his brother and those of the former UFA actor Arthur Duarte . His only work as a film director, O Pátio das Cantigas (Eng. "Backyard of Songs", 1942), was one of the greatest cinema successes of his time in Portugal, thanks in part to his own comedic performance. Again he played the shy and skinny, but inventive and humorous, lively lover.

He also made a name for himself as a serious theater director, especially with his productions of St. Joan by George Bernard Shaw and Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett in the 1950s. From 1978 to 1981 he was director of the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II on Rossio Square in Lisbon.
