Henrique Baptista Vaz Pacheco do Canto e Castro (born April 24, 1930 in Lisbon , † February 1, 2005 in Almada ) was a Portuguese actor.

Life

Canto e Castro already appeared as a child in youth programs on the public broadcaster Emissora Nacional . He first appeared on stage at the age of 13, as an amateur in the theater group Centro Universitário de Lisboa , which was part of the youth organization of the Estado Novo dictatorship, the Mocidade Portuguesa . After his first role on April 9, 1943 in Lição do Tempo at the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II , others followed before he enrolled at the National Conservatory ( Conservatório Nacional , today ESTC ) in 1945 . On July 27, 1947, he graduated with a grade of 18 (maximum grade is 20). He then became a professional actor and joined various ensembles in the greater Lisbon area. From 1953 he also took on roles at the popular revue theaters in the capital, but continued to perform primarily in demanding roles on the stage. In 1960 he was part of the ensemble Amélia Rey Colaço , and celebrated a number of successes in a variety of ensembles, including 1,967 in the play O Fusível by Peter Shaffer , which became one of his greatest theatrical successes. So he switched between serious roles, entertainment theater and children's theater, belonged u. a. to the permanent ensembles of the Teatro da Trindade and the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, appeared occasionally on television, and in 1957 also took on a first film role.

From the end of the 1970s he worked increasingly as a voice actor. Thanks to his work in television series such as Maya the Bee , his distinctive voice also became known among young people. Towards the end of the 1980s he increasingly withdrew from the theater stage without ever giving it up completely. He was now seen more often on television, for example in the successful series Duarte e Companhia , but also in various telenovelas . Since the 1990s in particular, he has been a sought-after film actor, but rarely in leading roles.

He was married to the actress Ema da Purificação Dias, with whom he had three sons. Canto e Castro died on February 1, 2005 in his home in Almada.

reception

He was one of the most renowned actors in the theater in Portugal. Despite his inconspicuousness, he was one of the most renowned actors in Portuguese film . Unlike in the theater, however, he was rarely seen in leading roles. He was nominated only once for the Globos de Ouro 1999 in the “Best Actor” category. His inconspicuous, convincing interpretations made him an important character actor.

Among his few international film roles was his appearance in Wim Wenders ' highly acclaimed film Lisbon Story from 1994. His sovereign portrayal of the good-natured, worthy hairdresser was a role that was typical of him.
