Alain Tanner (born December 6, 1929 in Geneva ) is a Swiss film director and screenwriter who became known for visionary, sensitive films such as Jonas qui aura 25 ans en l'an 2000 , A Flame in My Heart and Messidor .

Life

Alain Tanner studied economics at the University of Geneva . In 1951 he headed the college's film club , founded by the now equally well-known film director Claude Goretta . After graduating from university and briefly working for international shipping companies, he was drawn to filmmaking.

In 1955 he found work at the British Film Institute in London, activities such as subtitling, translating and organizing the archive. He made his first own free cinema short film “Nice Time” in 1957 together with Claude Goretta. The debut won a prize at the Venice Film Festival and received critical acclaim.

Tanner went to France for a while, where he assisted on several commercial films. In Paris he met some of the most important directors of the Nouvelle Vague as well as Henri Langlois , the director of the Cinémathèque française . Critics occasionally noted that there were influences from, for example, Jean-Luc Godard and Robert Bresson in his film language . He disliked the atmosphere in the film circles there; he characterized it as "cutthroat".

Between 1960 and 1968 he returned to Switzerland, where he made more than 40 films and documentaries for French-speaking television. In 1962 he co-founded the Swiss Association of Young Filmmakers Groupe 5 .

His first big film Charles - Dead or Alive from 1969 won first prize at the Locarno International Film Festival of the same year; In 2002 it was shown again in the Berlinale retrospective . Of his next four films, three ( La Salamandre , 1971; Le Milieu du monde , 1974 and Jonas… , 1976) were made in close collaboration with the well-known writer John Berger .
