He began his own directorial work with various short films before producing his first long feature film, Versunkener Morgen (orig .: Manhã Submersa), based on the novel by Vergílio Ferreira . The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1980 and received international criticism. He established António as the director of Portuguese films .

Lauro António then produced a series (1983-1984) for the public television RTP, under the title Histórias de Mulheres (Eng .: stories of women). The works of himself and those of the other directors involved illuminated the situation of women in Portugal after the Carnation Revolution from different angles . Among António's four contributions was Casino Oceano , which premiered at the 1983 film festival in Casino Figueira and was partly filmed in the eponymous Casino Oceano , which is located next to the festival venue .

Since then, he has only appeared sporadically as a director. In the mid-1990s, he became program manager in the feature film department for the private television broadcaster TVI , where he also showed films that he himself selected in the series Lauro António apresenta . In 2009, the public service RTP showed a documentary filmed by António on the 50th anniversary of Humberto Delgado's presidential candidacy in 1959, one of the most important moments of resistance against the Salazar regime.
