Rudolf von Merkl
Baron Rudolf von Merkl (born March 28, 1831 in Vienna ; † January 22, 1911 there ) was an Austrian general and briefly Minister of War of Austria-Hungary in 1893 .
Merkl joined the military in 1849 and served as a general staff officer in the German War in Venice in 1866 . Since 1872 head of the 5th department in the Reich Ministry of War, he was responsible for preparing the 1878 occupation campaign in Bosnia and Herzegovina . From 1885 to 1888 Merkl acted as section head in the Austro-Hungarian War Ministry, and from August 5, 1893 to September 23, 1893, as interim joint Austro-Hungarian War Minister.
