Ferdinand von Bauer
Ferdinand Bauer , since 1881 Ferdinand Freiherr von Bauer (born March 7, 1825 in Lemberg ; † July 22, 1893 in Vienna ) was a general in the Austro-Hungarian Army and Reich Minister of War .
Life
Ferdinand Bauer entered the Imperial and Royal Engineering Academy in 1836, was promoted to lieutenant in the engineering corps in 1841 and as a captain to the troops in 1848 . In 1849 he took part in the fighting in Hungary , became a major in 1859 and fought as a brigade commander in the Third Italian War of Independence in 1866 .
From 1869 to 1871, Bauer was the fortress commander of Timisoara and between 1878 and 1881 he was the military commander in Sibiu , then until 1888 the commanding general in Vienna. Promoted to Feldzeugmeister in 1881 , he became the owner of Infantry Regiment No. 84. On March 16, 1888, Bauer was appointed Reich Minister of War.
Ferdinand Freiherr von Bauer died unexpectedly on July 22, 1893 after a short illness . On July 25, 1893, in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph I , his corpse was officially given the last escort with a funeral conduit leading from the Austro-Hungarian War Ministry (today: Am Hof 2) to the Augarten Bridge . The coffin was brought from the Augartenbrücke to the kk Nordbahnhof , from where it was transported to the family crypt in Lemberg .
