Carl Joseph Franz Edler von Greth (also Karl von Greth , born November 2, 1754 in Wiener Neustadt , † October 15, 1827 in Timisoara ) was the owner of the Imperial Infantry Regiment No. 23 and fortress commander in Timisoara.

Live and act

His father, Christoph Greth, was a "diocese court master".

On June 17, 1774, Greth joined Infantry Regiment No. 3 "Carl von Lothringen" as a cadet and in May 1776 was transferred as an ensign to Infantry Regiment No. 40 "Karl Colloredo". With this regiment Greth came to Cologne, where he was transferred in 1793 in the rank of lieutenant captain to the then Border Infantry Regiment No. 16 (the Transylvanian Wallachian Border Regiment) and was promoted to captain in the same year . Greth made a steep career in the Imperial and Royal Infantry and made it up to a general . Greth took part in the campaigns of 1778-1779-1815. On December 4, 1796 he was first promoted to major and commanded to Border Infantry Regiment No. 8 , the Gradiskans . In April 1798 he came to the "Löwenburgischen Freikorps" and after its dissolution in July 1798 to the light infantry battalion No. 9. After his promotion to lieutenant colonel on August 1, 1800 he was assigned to the border infantry regiment No. 9 as well in November 1802 back to the Border Infantry Regiment No. 8, to whose colonel and commander he was appointed in 1805. In May 1809 Greth was promoted to major general , in September 1813 to field marshal lieutenant . In the same year commanded the 3rd Division of the I. Corps of Feldzeugmeister Colloredo-Mansfeld in the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig .

In January 1813 he came to Agram as a division general . In 1817 he became the owner of Infantry Regiment No. 23 and was probably knighted shortly before, in order to finally become fortress commander in Timisoara in January 1823. He held this position until his death in 1827. In Timisoara he married Johanna von Honrath , Ludwig van Beethoven's childhood sweetheart . Carl von Greth died on October 15, 1827. He and his wife are buried in the crypt of the Piarist Church in Timisoara .
