Johann von Soro (alternative spelling: Johann von Saurau , * 1730 in Buda , Habsburg Monarchy ; † February 15, 1809 in Lugosch , Austrian Empire ) was Feldzeugmeister , bearer of the Maria Theresa Order of Knights and commanding general of the Temescher Banat .

His father Johann Sebastian von Soro had set up an Italian free corps during the War of the Austrian Succession . The son began his military career in his father's volunteer corps.

Johann von Soro was promoted to major in the Deutschmeister infantry regiment in 1756 . On June 18, he commanded a grenadier battalion near Kolín , was promoted to lieutenant colonel on the battlefield and received the knight's cross of the Maria Theresa Order from Field Marshal Daun on April 23, 1758 at the army headquarters in Skalitz .

After he lost his leg on the battlefield and was unfit for military service, he became the fortress commander of Timisoara. He performed this function from 1767 to 1791. From 1784 to 1788 he was an interim and from 1788 to 1805 real commanding general in the Temescher Banat. On February 10, 1797 he was raised to the Hungarian nobility . In the Temescher Banat he worked for the state institution and in the Turkish war. In 1805 he retired and moved to Lugosch with his wife Anastasia, where he had considerable possessions. Von Soro died on February 15, 1809. He was buried by the Provost of Csanád, Johann Ignaz Ekler, under the main altar of the Lugoscher Minorite Church.
