Johann Baptist Freiherr von Waldstätten , (born June 24, 1833 in Gospić , † December 31, 1914 in Vienna ), son of Franz Georg Dominik and brother of Georg von Waldstätten , was the owner of Infantry Regiment No. 81 (1887), kuk real secret Rat (1888), Feldzeugmeister (1889 - the batch name was changed to General der Infanterie in 1908 ) and General Troop Inspector (1898), teacher of tactics at the Central Cavalry School, professor at the Austro-Hungarian War Academy (war school) and military writer from the von family Waldstätten .

biography

The young Johann, son of Franz Georg Dominik Freiherrn von Waldstätten (1775–1843), attended the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt from September 25, 1844 , on August 15, 1851 lieutenant in Infantry Regiment No. 39 Dom Miguel, on May 1 1854 first lieutenant, then, after completing military school, promoted to captain in the general staff (November 4, 1856). As such, he took part in the campaign in Italy in 1859 and received the Order of the Iron Crown 3rd Class with War Decoration (August 15, 1859) and, after the Battle of Solferino, the Imperial and Royal Military Merit Cross with war decoration and the Knight's Cross for his services at Magenta and Turbigo 1st class of the Grand Ducal Hessian Order of Ludwig (November 3, 1859).

On April 12, 1864 he was promoted to teaching tactics at the Central Cavalry School, and on June 20, 1865 major. As such, he took part in the campaign against Prussia in 1866 and was honored for his services with the Knight's Cross of the Austrian Leopold Order with war decoration and the Commander's Cross 2nd Class of the Royal Saxon Albrecht Order (October 3, 1866). Since May 29, 1867 he was lieutenant colonel in Count Neipperg Dragoon Regiment No. 12, then moved up to the position of colonel in the General Staff (May 1, 1870) and from September 22, 1870 worked as a professor at the War Academy.

In 1876 Waldstätten became head of the office for operational and special general staff work, in 1877 commander of the 7th Infantry Brigade in Sarajevo and major general (rank of November 8, 1877), in which capacity he participated in the occupation of Bosnia in 1878. In 1879 appointed commander of the 56th, 1880 of the 72nd, 1881 of the 13th Infantry Brigade and in the same year commander of the 34th Infantry Troop Division, in 1882 appointed Field Marshal Lieutenant and Commander of the 6th Infantry Troop Division. In 1886 he was appointed deputy commander of the kk Landwehr and a year later owner of the 81st Infantry Regiment. In 1889 he became commander of the 7th Corps and commanding general in Timişoara . Finally, on November 1, 1889, he was promoted to Feldzeugmeister. On February 7, 1898, he was appointed General Troop Inspector. He also carried the Commander's Cross of the Imperial Austrian Order of Franz Joseph .

Waldstätten was also the teacher of the later Field Marshal Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf .

family

He married Olga Merinsky (1834–1923) in Vienna on June 24, 1872.

Since the marriage remained childless, Johann adopted two nephews of his wife, who accordingly led the name Waldstätten-Zipperer and who in 1904 in Vienna (February 6, diploma of April 17) the nobility and the baron class of their uncle (with a changed coat of arms) was transferred.

With a resolution of February 6, 1904 (Vienna diploma on April 17, 1904) the brothers Heinrich and Georg Zipperer were granted the baron class in the notation and spelling “Waldstätten-Zipperer”.

Quartered: 1 in blue a two-tailed, crowned golden lion on the inside, 2 in gold a red-tongued, gold-armed, crowned black eagle on the inside, 3 in silver on the central dome of a green three-mountain a natural tree, 4 in red a silver star (six pointed Rays). Baron's crown and three crowned helmets: on the right with black and gold covers the eagle of the shield, on the middle with red and black covers three (blue - red - blue) ostrich feathers, on the left with blue and gold covers the lion of the shield.
