Anton Freiherr von Scudier (born January 2, 1818 in Villach , Carinthia , † May 31, 1900 in Vienna ) was an Austrian field marshal lieutenant in the Austro-Hungarian army , military and fortress commander of Timisoara .

Life

Scudier was the son of an officer and from 1881 the son-in-law of Joseph von Scheda . After graduating from the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt (1829-37) he was assigned to the 47th Infantry Regiment in Bologna and from 1839 to the General Quartermaster's Staff in Italy . In 1845 Scudier was transferred to Vienna as a first lieutenant .

After the riots in April 1848 in Krakow (Cracow) for Captain transported, he made the campaign in Hungary as a Major with and came after the battle of Budamér wounded in captivity. In 1849 he distinguished himself from New Szeged (Újszeged) and was awarded the Military Merit Cross for his achievements in this campaign . Then Scudier was military officer at the General Command in Brno (Brno). Subsequently, as a lieutenant colonel (1851) translated back to the general quartermaster staff, he was then responsible in the army high command for the reorganization of the military educational institutions and worked out a reform plan valid until 1868 from 1851-1852. 1859 General Chief of Staff of the 4th Army Corps in Lviv (L'viv), later promoted to Major General and Brigadier at the 8th Army Corps and finally to the general chief of staff of the 2nd Army in Italy, was Scudier 1859 after the Battle of Solferino with awarded the Order of the Iron Crown, 2nd class . In the same year he was raised to the nobility with the predicate of Scudier (Scudo = shield).

In 1860 he was military commander in Trieste (Trieste), he was then transferred to Pola (Pula) as a troop brigadier and fortress commander , in 1862 to the 5th Army Corps in Verona , later to Peschiera and in 1866 to Mantua (Mantova) to the 7th Army Corps. After the Battle of Custozza (1866) before a court martial because of an unauthorized change of position , he was initially sentenced to death, but soon afterwards rehabilitated .

Then in Komorn / Komárom (Komárno), Scudier was in 1867 field marshal lieutenant and commander of the 17th troop division in Timisoara and from 1869 military commander there, from 1872 with the dissolution of the Banat military border and the introduction of civil administration there. Scudier was commanding general in the Banat from June 26, 1871 to November 1, 1878 and from 1872 also fortress commander of Timisoara. Until 1880 he was also responsible for the basic division between the Hungarian state and the border communities.

Since 1876 owner of the 29th Infantry Regiment, Scudier was retired as Feldzeugmeister ad honores in 1878 and devoted himself to scientific and economic tasks. From 1880 he was a member of the Science Club in Vienna and in 1881 a juror at the international geographical congress in Venice, where he was also elected president of the mathematics class. From 1886 President of the Vienna Board of Directors of the Austro-Hungarian State Railroad Company .

The trial he won against the newspaper “Das Vaterland”, which had confronted him with allegations of corruption, caused a sensation in 1890. Awarded the Order of the Iron Crown 1st Class and Privy Councilor in 1873 , Scudier was honored by the city of Timisoara for his services to urban development by erecting a monument in the Central Park (Romanian: Parcul Central ), which at that time bore his name.

Shield split lengthways. In the right half, divided diagonally to the right by Roth over silver, a shiny sword with a golden hilt, overlying the division. In the left blue half of the shield a triangular gold shield (Scudo, therefore Scudier) with a needle point, set up to the right. The baron's crown rests on the shield with the crowned tournament helmet placed on it. The crown of the helmet bears an open eagle flight, divided transversely by red over silver to the right and gold over blue to the left, to which a shiny sword is set on a pole by a golden hilt. The helmet covers of the right helmet are underlaid red with silver, those of the left blue with gold.
