Edmund Freiherr von Krieghammer (born June 4, 1832 in Landshut , Moravia , † August 21, 1906 in Bad Ischl ) was an Austrian general of the cavalry and Reich Minister of War of Austria-Hungary .

Life

Warhammer attended the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt , joined in 1849 as a lieutenant in the 5th Dragoon - Regiment , and then made the war against Hungary with. In the war against Italy (1859) and against Prussia ( German War 1866) he took part as a cavalry master . After attending the Central Cavalry and War School , he was promoted to major and wing adjutant to the emperor in 1869 , to colonel in 1874 , to major general in 1879 and finally to field marshal lieutenant in 1881 .

From 1886, Krieghammer commanded the cavalry division in Lemberg , from 1888 the 6th infantry division, from 1889 the 1st Corps as commanding general in Krakow . In 1891 he was made general of the cavalry . On September 23, 1893, after the death of Ferdinand von Bauer, he was appointed Reich Minister of War. He resigned from this office in December 1902 because the military bill he had introduced met resistance in the Hungarian Chamber of Deputies. He was succeeded by Heinrich von Pitreich (1841–1920).

Edmund Freiherr von Krieghammer died on August 21, 1906 in Bad Ischl.

Others

After his death, General von Krieghammer was transferred to the Slovenian town of Gomilsko (municipality of Braslovče ) and buried in the local cemetery, as his brother-in-law, Carl Haupt von Hohentrenk, owned the nearby Straussenegg (Štravsenek) castle and there was an area reserved for family burials of the cemetery existed. The tomb, cared for by the responsible municipality of Braslovče, is still preserved today.
