Artur Maximilian von Bylandt-Rheidt (born May 3, 1821 in Vienna ; † February 21, 1891 ibid) was an Austrian Feldzeugmeister and Reich Minister of War between 1876 and 1888 .

origin

He comes from the Bylandt-Rheidt family of officers . His parents were the Austrian officer Ferdinand von Bylandt-Rheidt (born January 11, 1796; † November 26, 1862) and his wife Adelheid von Mikusch and Buchberg (born August 26, 1798; † June 24, 1877).

Life

In 1837 he joined a regiment of the army as a military cadet and took part in the suppression of the uprisings in Hungary from 1848 to 1849 and in the Sardinian War in 1859 .

In 1864 he was first president of the artillery committee in the field artillery directorate before he became adlatus of the field artillery directorate in 1866 after the withdrawal of the Northern Army . In 1869 he was promoted to major general and was appointed president of the Technical and Administrative Military Committee of the Land Forces . In this capacity he was promoted to Lieutenant Field Marshal in 1874 .

On June 20, 1876, he became Reich Minister of War, and in this function did great service in the reorganization of the land forces and especially the artillery.

On August 21, 1876, in this function, he was also one of the participants in the opening ceremonies of the Reichsbrücke .

In 1882 he was also Feldzeugmeister . During his term of office, which lasted until March 16, 1888, the military budget was increased from 100 to 117 guilders and the mandatory service was increased by ten years through the Landsturm Act . In addition to a simplification of the internal administration of the army, there was also an increase in the military salary and pensions . He also started the introduction of the weapons developed by Ferdinand Mannlicher . Bylandt-Rheidt, who advocated maintaining a uniform language in the army, was on the other hand an opponent of the decentralization of the military railroad system .

On March 17, 1888, Artur Reichsgraf Bylandt-Rheidt was retired at his own request. He spent the last years of his life, suffering badly , partly in Vienna (Praterstrasse 66, Vienna- Leopoldstadt ), partly in Vöslau and Baden

He married Countess Maria Anna von Harbuval and Chamare on January 27, 1852 in Prague (* August 25, 1832, † September 8, 1912). The couple had several children:

  • Artur (February 3, 1854; † July 5, 1915), politician, agriculture and interior minister ⚭ 1883 Franziska von Saint-Genois (born November 6, 1854; † December 6, 1929)
  • Eugene (April 28, 1866 - December 5, 1914)
