Initially, the ancestors carried the family name Doys , only later did the ownership name Bylandt become a gender designation. The first verifiable ancestor of this family is the Wilhelmus dictus Doys , who appeared in 1260 . He fell in the Battle of Worringen in 1288 . It was mentioned in a document in 1275 that his Scate castle, also called Bilant, north of Kleve on the left bank of the Rhine , was a fiefdom of the Counts of Kleve. His successor Dietrich , fiefdom holder of the Bylandt and Pannerden estates, called himself Deus de Bylandt in 1294 . From the next generation, from 1317, the name Bylandt is recorded continuously.

According to the GHdA , the first officially mentioned representative of the sex of the Ministeriale von Gelderland , Theodoricus Doys , who appears first on July 15, 1233 and with whom the uninterrupted line of tribe begins. His grandson of the same name is enfeoffed with Bilant at Pannerden in 1303, from which the family takes the name.

The sex gained great influence and significant land holdings over time. For a long time the Lords of Bylandt were also given the office of marshal of the County of Kleve .

Rheydt Castle in Mönchengladbach

Around 1500 three lines formed. The first line of Bylandt-Well , which owned the Well in Geldern , went out early. The second line, Bylandt-Reydt, inherited the rulership of Rheydt near Mönchengladbach around 1500 , which it kept until 1608 or 1636. She was able to steadily expand her property and spread to Austria , Holland and the rest of Germany under the name of Count von Bylandt, Barone zu Rheydt . Members of the third line, Bylandt-Halt-Spaldorf, were initially able to acquire the castles Haus Halt and Spaldorf in the north of the state of Kleve. Later, the Rheydt rulership from 1637 to 1794 and the Westphalian manor Palsterkamp from 1651 to 1779 were added. Associated with this was the office of master hereditary hunter of the prince Abbey of Herford .

Members of the second line Bylandt-Reydt received the imperial baron status in 1590 and partly held the title of count, confirmed in 1865, since the 17th century . Members of the third line, Bylandt-Halt-Spaldorf , were confirmed as barons by Kurbrandenburg in 1661 and obtained an imperial count diploma in 1678.
