Halt House (North Rhine-Westphalia)
House hold

Haus Halt is a former moated castle on the Rhine near Keeken , a district of Kleve in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

Haus Halt is first mentioned in a document in 1314 as Count Dietrich VII./IX. von Kleve assured Otto Doys that this house was not feudal from the county of Kleve . After Otto's death, the castle fell to his daughter Hadewig, who had married into the Bylandt family. After this family, who owned Haus Halt for centuries, it was also called 'Haus Bylandt'.

Due to its proximity to the important fortress Schenkenschanz , which was built at the end of the 16th century, the appearance of the Halt house is documented on numerous drawings, paintings and plans. It was a four-wing complex with corner towers and an inner courtyard with a bailey in the south. The massive southwest tower, which was probably given a baroque dome in the 17th century, was particularly striking; a stair tower in the inner courtyard was probably crowned with a lantern around the same time. In 1728 the east side of the complex was badly damaged by floods. Drawings by Jan de Beijers and Cornelis Pronks from 1735 show the condition of the still impressive ruin. In the following years the entire castle was demolished by floods.
