Peter Broucek

Peter Brouček (born August 16, 1938 in Vienna ) is an Austrian historian . From 1987 to 1990 he was President of the Society for Austrian Army Studies . For more than forty years in the Austrian State Archives (ÖStA), Department of War Archives, he was most recently its deputy director. His work on Austrian military historiography is considered significant.

Life

As the son of a master carpenter who was born in Karlovy Vary in West Bohemia and his wife, a commercial employee, Peter Broucek experienced the end of World War II (1939–1945) in the Weinviertel . In 1956 he passed the Matura at the Realschule Wien XIX Döbling and from 1956 studied history and German at the University of Vienna . In 1961 he was at Heinz Zatschek with the thesis history of the Vienna Riemer industry to 1788 for Dr. phil. PhD. In addition, from 1959 to 1962 he attended the course at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research in Vienna ( state examination 1963: with an examination thesis with Friedrich Walter on the so-called hall books in the general administrative archive until 1749) .

In 1962 he joined the scientific service of the Austrian State Archives (ÖStA), War Archives Department in Vienna as a contract employee. In 1966 he became state archivist 2nd class and later 1st class and in 1975 archivist. From 1981 he was a consultant for the field files of the armies of Austria and Austria-Hungary . In 1983 he was appointed senior councilor. In 1993 he was appointed court counselor by the Austrian Federal President Thomas Klestil and was in charge of another group of “bequests and collections”, which was directly subordinate to the General Directorate of the ÖStA. In 2003 he was retired, most recently as deputy director under Rainer Egger . Since then he has continued to work as a journalist.

From 1987 to 1990 he was President of the Society for Austrian Army Studies . He is also a member of the Institute for Austrian Studies, the Commission Autrichienne d'Histoire Militaire, the Commission for Research into the History of Austria from 1918–1938 and the Heraldic-Genealogical Society "Adler" .

Broucek is a first lieutenant in the reserve of the Austrian Armed Forces .

Publications

Broucek is the author of several books, scientific papers and editions also Austria's history since the early modern period and the military history of the 17th to 20th centuries as well as to archive history and the military source study : He is the editor of several in Böhlau Verlag published memoirs of Austrian military; from 1980 to 1988 about the editions of Edmund Glaise-Horstenau's diaries . In 2000 he published a history of Austrian military historiography with Kurt Peball . Broucek is also the author of countless entries in the Austrian Biographical Lexicon 1815-1950 and in the New German Biography . He also submitted translations of works by Thomas M. Barker and Bruce F. Pauleys .

The German historian Ulrich Kluge attested him “profound knowledge of the Austrian military system”.
