Erich Hillbrand

Erich Wilhelm Hillbrand (born April 30, 1926 in Vienna ) is an Austrian historian . He was director of the traffic and war archives in Vienna.

Life

Hillbrand was born in 1926 as the son of a typesetter. He attended high school Vienna XVII. In 1944/45 he did military service and was taken prisoner of war. From 1946 he visited the RG Bruck / Mur. He then studied history and geography at the University of Vienna . In 1950 he became a project member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . In 1953 he was at Alfons Lhotsky on "The Ungeld in Lower and Upper Austria from the 13th to the 19th century" for Dr. phil. PhD.

In 1955/56 he worked on the Linzer Regesten in Kremsmünster , Linz and Wels . In 1956 he became a senior civil servant in the map collection of the War Archives Department / Austrian State Archives in Vienna. From 1965 to 1968 he completed the course at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research in Vienna (examination work with Erich Zöllner ). In 1987 he became director of the transport archive department (until 1989) and in 1989 of the war archive department. In 1992 the councilor retired.

Hillbrand, member of the Autrichienne d'Histoire Militaire Commission, is the author of several articles in the New German Biography and in the Austrian Biographical Lexicon 1815–1950 .

Hillbrand was married to the historian Friederike Hillbrand-Grill (1931–2015) and had one child.
