Erwin A. Schmidl

Erwin A. Schmidl (born December 15, 1956 in Vienna ) is an Austrian military historian .

Life

Schmidl studied history , ethnology and art history at the University of Vienna . In 1981 he was with a dissertation on the Boer War at the Faculty for Dr. phil. ( sub auspiciis praesidentis ) is doing her doctorate. In 1993 he completed a postgraduate course at the Europa-Akademie Vienna and in 2001 he completed his habilitation on “Development of International Peace Operations” at the University of Innsbruck .

In 1981 he became a research associate at the Army History Museum (HGM) in Vienna. Most recently he was head of the military science and military history research department of the HGM. In 1991 he became a member of the department for international organizations, especially United Nations affairs, at the Austrian Foreign Ministry . In 1994 he was in South Africa as a UN observer . In 1994/95 he was Head of Division “Publications” at the HGM and in 1995/96 J. Randolph Senior Fellow at the United States Institute of Peace in Washington, DC From 1996 to 2001 he worked in the military science office and was most recently head of the research department.

In 2001 he became a university lecturer for modern history and contemporary history at the University of Innsbruck. At the same time, from 2001 to 2014 he was head of the "Contemporary History" department at the Institute for Strategy and Security Policy of the National Defense Academy in Vienna, which he headed from 2007 to 2008 and from 2012 (interim). He bears the title of Hofrat . In 2004 he was visiting professor at the University of Pretoria . In addition, he works at the Institute for Contemporary History at the University of Vienna .

From 2010 to 2015 he was Secretary General of the International Commission for Military History , and since 2015 he has remained a member of the Board. He is President of the Austrian Commission for Military History , the Austrian Society for Heereskunde and the Austrian-South African Club as well as Secretary General of the Association of Austrian Historians and Historical Societies . He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Research on the Consequences of War in Graz-Vienna-Raabs.

His main research interests are military history and security policy.

Schmidl is married and lives in Vienna and Graz.
