Friedrich Walter (historian, 1896)

Friedrich Walter (born August 18, 1896 in Vienna ; † May 30, 1968 there ) was an Austrian historian . He was an associate professor for modern history and historical auxiliary sciences at the University of Vienna .

Life

Walter was born in Vienna in 1896 as the son of a bookbinder and his wife. After graduating from the Academic Gymnasium in Vienna in 1914 , he did military service a. a. as an officer in the Feldjäger Battalion 21. From 1918 he studied history at the University of Vienna . In 1920 he was with Alfred Francis Přibram with the dissertation Archduke Stephan. 1817-1867 to Dr. phil. PhD. From 1921 to 1923 he completed the course at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research as an associate member (homework with Oswald Redlich ). As early as 1920 he became a scientific official in the State Archives of the Interior and Justice. In 1930 he moved to the Hofkammerarchiv. In 1945 he retired.

In 1955 he became a private lecturer in historical auxiliary sciences with special emphasis on archival and file studies at the University of Vienna. In 1956 his lectureship was expanded to include constitutional and administrative history. In 1959 he received the title of extraordinary professor (tit. Ao. Prof.) for modern history and historical auxiliary sciences at the University of Vienna. He was also a lecturer at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research, where he was in charge of archival and file studies as well as literacy and the constitutional and administrative history of Austria in modern times.

Walter was a member of the Vienna Catholic Academy from 1949 (he edited the special section of the Austria Sacra by Leo Santifaller ), from 1957 of the Commission for Modern History of Austria, from 1958 of the Southeast German Historical Commission and from 1961 of the Historical Commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . He was also a co-opted member of the Landscapes and Weistümer Commission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .
