In the crosshairs - Alone against all (Original title: Behind Enemy Lines ) is an action film with thriller elements in a military setting from 2001 by John Moore with Owen Wilson and Gene Hackman in the lead roles.

action

The US Navy officers Lieutenant Jeremy Stackhouse (pilot) and Lieutenant Chris Burnett, his weapons systems officer , are stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) off the coast of Croatia , where they are supposed to monitor the no-fly zone over Bosnia and Herzegovina . The aircraft carrier's commander, Rear Admiral (upper half) Leslie McMahon Reigart is considered tough; he justified his approach with the fact that only soldiers led in this way are able to survive in times of war. Lieutenant Burnett, who is a contract soldier , has doubts whether he should sign up for more years of service.

Stackhouse and Burnett are on a reconnaissance mission on Christmas Day when they discover a genocide of the Serbian militia against Muslims and record it with the help of a special camera, whereupon the Serbian militia leader Lokar has their F-18 Super Hornet shot down by an SA-13 anti-aircraft system. The downed F / A-18 crashes on a hill in a nearby forest. The Serbian militias immediately set out to recover the wreck and to find the recorded video tape. But the disc with the recorded files is in Burnett's ejection seat , which fell down on a frozen lake. Stackhouse and Burnett can get out of the ejector seat, land reasonably safely, with Stackhouse injured in the leg and unable to walk. When Burnett tries to use the radio to send a radio message, which he first has to climb a higher mountain for the transmission to work, the Serbian troops discover Stackhouse and a non-uniformed Serb named Sasha shoots Stackhouse in the back of the head. Burnett sees his best comrade murdered in cold blood. Through Burnett's outcry at the murder, Sasha discovers him and takes up the pursuit together with the Serbian militias.

Now Burnett has to make his way out of his emergency equipment in the direction of the NATO protection zone with his radio, a map, some water, a compass, a multitool and his Beretta 92 . Meanwhile, Admiral Reigart immediately wants to send an armed rescue team with marines to get Burnett out, but is prevented by the French Admiral Piquet because the rescue operation would threaten peace efforts in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Burnett is constantly being chased by Sasha and the militia; once he has to hide between the corpses in an open mass grave that he and his pilot had photographed during the reconnaissance. Another time he escapes because he swaps his uniform for a dead man's clothes and also takes a Kalashnikov with him. Reigart's superior in the NATO command structure, Admiral Piquet, continues to delay the rescue operation. When he finally dispatched a Mi-8 helicopter of the French Army with a rescue team, the media published the photos of a dead man (the one from whom Burnett had recently taken off his uniform and assault rifle ) in Burnett's uniform. The rescue is canceled and Burnett has to watch as the French helicopter flies away before his eyes.

Burnett then returns to the crash site and turns the signal on his ejector seat back on. In the operations room of the aircraft carrier, the signal is picked up, and Admiral Reigart now decides finally to save Burnett, cost what it may. He knows this unauthorized rescue operation can cost him his job. He commands a force of US Marines under the command of Captain Rodway and flies three Bell UH-1 helicopters from the USMC , armed with rocket launchers , miniguns and on-board cannons, to the location of the ejection seat. The helicopters reached the pick-up point at the same time as the Serbian militias, and violent fighting broke out. Burnett is asked by Reigart to get into one of the helicopters, but Burnett runs back to the ejection seat and fetches the MO disk with the recorded images of the forbidden military activities of the Serbs from the recorder installed there . The helicopter flies too high for Burnett to get in from the ground, so Captain Rodway lets himself down with a rope and can grab Burnett, who is hit in the leg and arm towards the cliff, by the arm and pull him up. All of this happened under heavy fire from infantry and tanks. Shortly thereafter, the three helicopters with Burnett return to the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson .

Admiral Reigart is relieved of his command after the end of the mission for disobeying orders. He is offered a position in administration within the US Navy, but he refuses. He prefers to take early retirement.

background

  • The film was inspired by the experiences of the US pilot Scott O'Grady who was shot down during the Bosnian War on June 2, 1995 , but allows himself changes and artistic freedom. O'Grady disapproved of his portrayal in the film and was not asked for permission in advance, whereupon O'Grady tried to sue 20th Century Fox for damages.
  • The US Department of Defense supported the film and worked closely with the filmmakers, in return the portrayal of the US Army in the film had to be correspondingly positive. The Ministry of Defense also had direct influence on the script and scenes filmed, for example a scene planned by the director, such as Admiral Reigart calling a journalist, had to be deleted.

Reviews

“Action-oriented war film based on real events, effectively prepared, but without any differentiated intellectual penetration. Some fascinating ideas interrupt the predictable, edifying-patriotic conversation. "
