action

Prologue: The Korean War , which began in 1950 with the participation of the US Army, ended with a ceasefire and the separation of Korea into the states of North Korea and South Korea , which are still at war without a peace treaty. In April 1994, North Korea withdrew from the Non-Proliferation Treaty and announced that it would manufacture its own nuclear weapons. The US government then drew up a military operation plan ( Oplan 5027 ), which provided for a pre-emptive strike against the Nyŏngbyn nuclear facility . As a retaliatory strike by the North Korean army on the South Korean capital Seoul was feared as a result of the attack , the National Security Council of the United States planned to evacuate the civilian population. During the deliberations, preparations were stopped by a call from former US President Jimmy Carter , who had traveled to Pyongyang as a private person and, in an agreement with ruler Kim Il-sung, prevented the attack by the USA.

In the present: When the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency evaluates North Korean satellite images showing an ICBM , the US President is alerted that it is a three-stage Topol- class missile that is also targeting the USA could achieve.

Special forces of the US Army reach North Korean airspace via the South Korean airport Incheon and an inconspicuous airliner, where they are supposed to parachute at a height of 10,000 meters and detonate the rocket on the ground. This is to be done without a reference to the US Army and to look like an accident so as not to offer North Korea a justification for a counterstrike. After the soldiers Schulteiss and Meideros jumped off, the group received the order to cancel the operation. Lieutenant James accidentally falls off the plane and Callaghan jumps after him, disregarding the order.

When they are discovered on North Korean soil, there is a gun battle with a group of North Korean soldiers under Commander Hwang. James and Callaghan are captured and the other two soldiers are killed. In a North Korean camp, James meets Colonel Koh, who wants to keep the discovery of US soldiers on North Korean soil from their leader in order to prevent the outbreak of war.

A South Korean special unit manages to free the two of them from the North Korean camp. James is authorized to complete the operation with the assistance of the South Koreans. When radio contact breaks off, it is assumed that the mission has failed. The US President therefore sends stealth planes to bomb the missile base and accepts the risk of a retaliatory strike. Just before the planes arrive at the missile base, James manages to detonate the long-range missile from the ground. He received unexpected help from Colonel Koh, who let James carry out his mission so as not to aggravate the situation in his country.

The Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Vance, is relieved of command by the President for his warmongering behavior. When James is invited to the Oval Office to receive a commendation from the President, he is accompanied by his former instructor Boytano. Callaghan is sentenced to a total of 11 years in prison for failing to order and assaulting an officer. However, since the mission was classified as top secret, the verdict is removed from his file and he is released.

Epilogue: The news broadcasts report a gigantic cloud of smoke over North Korea.

background

  • The cloud of smoke mentioned in the film alludes to an actual incident that occurred on September 9, 2004 in the North Korean province of Ryanggang-do, the cause of which has never been clarified. Director and screenwriter James Dodson combined the fictional plot with historical events and actual circumstances and was thus able to use real scenes from news programs in the film.
  • The film was originally intended to be called Land of the Morning Calm instead of Axis of Evil , which is used as a lyrical name for the country in Korea.
  • In the film, color filters are used to classify scenes locally and to reinforce them emotionally. For example, scenes in North Korea are heavily de- saturated and shown with a slight green cast, while scenes in a South Korean market are shown in warm yellow tones.
  • James Dodson was a production manager for Twentieth Century Fox for Im Fadenkreuz - Alone Against All .
  • The entire film was shot in Bulgaria in 35 days .
  • Actor Eyal Podell , who plays Ensign David Barnes in this film, already had a supporting role as Sergeant Kennedy in the first "In the Crosshair" film, making him the only actor to appear in both films.

Reviews

“The action film intones the song of praise for US elite soldiers, using every imaginable cliché of the genre. Neither staging nor acting convincingly, he stands out at best because of the inflationary use of color filters and his tried and pseudorealistic fight scenes. "

"Instead of Owen C. Wilson , the less demanding action fan can expect the usual Navy Seal glorification full of pathos, empty talk and unrecognizable fight scenes in the" Private Ryan "style."
