As a child she played theater for the radio station Rádio Clube de Benguela . She graduated from high school and became an educator in her hometown in what was then the Portuguese colony of Angola. In 1962 she went to the University of Lisbon to study German philosophy . There she began her interest in acting in student theater groups.

In 1963 she was first seen on state television RTP in a play by Fernando Pessoa . In 1964 she went on tour with the Ensemble Fernando Pessoa under João d'Ávila through the colonies of Angola and Mozambique and appeared for the first time on a professional theater stage at the Teatro Nacional de Luanda .

Back in Portugal , she took acting lessons from Henriette Morineau at the Lisbon National Conservatory . Throughout the 1960s she continued to perform in the theater, record recitation records, and appear frequently on television with plays and literary readings. From 1966 to 1970 she was also a spokesperson for the Emissora Nacional and now finally dropped out of her studies. In 1972 she stood for the last time on the stage of a theater with Tartufo ( Tartuffe von Molière ) in the Teatro Villaret , the house founded by Raul Solnado in 1964 .

She took up a history degree and occasionally did theater for television. In 1975, after the Carnation Revolution , she returned to the stage, back to Villaret . In November of that year she moved to Brazil , where she was engaged for two telenovelas by TV Globo ( O Casarão 1976 and Duas Vidas 1977).

She went back to Portugal in 1977, where she briefly returned to the theater stage in 1978. It was the end of her active theatrical engagements, and it wasn't until 1987 that she was back on the stage of the Teatro Aberto for a play by José Saramago .

She became known to a larger audience primarily through her films. So she played the female lead in 1971 in Uma Abelha na Chuva ("A Bee in the Rain") by Fernando Lopes , a key work of the new Portuguese film, Novo Cinema . From then on, she starred in numerous movies, telenovelas and television films, both in Portugal and abroad, especially in France.

She was married to Zé Maria (José Maria de Barros Alves Caetano), the eldest of the four sons of Marcelo Caetano , the last head of government of the Estado Novo dictatorship. Laura Soveral died in July 2018 at the age of 85.
