The socially committed Pilar lives on a block in the greater Lisbon area , in the immediate vicinity of the extravagant older Aurora and her Cape Verdean housekeeper. When Aurora is dying, she asks Pilar to find a certain Gian Luca Ventura. When she finds him in an old people's home, he tells her his surprising life story, connected with Aurora, which begins with the words Aurora had a farm in Africa, at the foot of Monte Tabu ... This is where the second part of the film begins with a leap in time, which now shows the story told by Ventura, which takes place around 1960 in an unnamed Portuguese colony shortly before the outbreak of the Portuguese colonial war .

The Mount Taboo mentioned in the film does not exist in reality. The film was shot in the area of Gurué's tea plantations in the Mozambican province of Zambezia , as well as in Lisbon and at the Estoril Casino .
The film was shot in black and white . In the second part, the tone was also reduced. You can hear Ventura's narrative voice and various background noises and music from the film scenes, but not dialogues. The film title itself represents a further reference to the silent film and alludes to Murnau's film Tabu .
Portuguese institutions such as the ICA film funding institute and the public television broadcaster RTP were involved in the production, as well as the state film institute Ancine as a Brazilian partner , and the CNC film funding agency from France . German partners were the ZDF , the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and the Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein . The Franco-German broadcaster arte and the European MEDIA film funding program were also involved.

The film opened in German cinemas on December 20, 2012. It started here in 47 cinemas, some in special screenings with the director present.
Tabu had previously shown at a number of international film festivals , such as the 2012 Berlinale , where it won the Alfred Bauer Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize . In 2013 the film was awarded the Prix du Syndicat Français de la Critique (Best Foreign Film) in France .
The critics praised the film for its poetic, unconventional narrative style, which remains coherent and is presented fluently, and skilfully makes reference to film history at various points. The subliminal humor was also noted positively, for example in some dialogues in the first part, or when songs from the Ronettes ( Be My Baby , Baby I love you ) can be heard in different, rather unknown versions in the second part . In one scene, for example, the beat band from the circle of friends of the young Aurora stands by the swimming pool and plays Baby I love you , while the audience can hear the version of the Ramones recorded in a later era .

Tabu was released on DVD in Portugal in 2012. The film then went on sale in other countries, including Germany in 2014.
In 2016, Tabu ranked 71st in a BBC survey of the 100 most important films of the 21st century .
