Be My Baby is the title of a 1963 song by The Ronettes , written by Phil Spector , Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich .

History of origin

The Ronettes were a New York female trio with a heavy Brooklyn accent signed by Phil Spector for his record label Philles Records in March 1963 . When Spector received the composition Be My Baby from Barry / Greenwich, he produced it with the Ronettes as their first single. The recording sessions began on July 5, 1963 at the Gold Star Studios in Hollywood . It took four hours of intense rehearsal before sound engineer Larry Levine even started recording. As a music producer, Spector had always placed great emphasis on the instrumentation of previous music recordings with other artists on his label. He used members of The Wrecking Crew , a changing group of studio musicians . He used four guitarists ( Billy Strange , Tommy Tedesco , Barney Kessel and Bill Pitman), as well as four keyboard players ( Leon Russell , Larry Knechtel , Al De Lory and Don Randi ). Carol Kaye and Ray Pohlman played bass, and two drummers were there, Hal Blaine and Earl Palmer . Completed with castanets and maracas, the song is the first in which Spector also used a full violin section. It took 42 takes in a four hour session to keep Spector happy.

The over-orchestration was underpinned by audio effects such as flanging and numerous overdubs , which was probably the best product of the Wall of Sound . Spector is mentioned as a co-composer only because his extensive production work should be appreciated; Legally, his composing part was a “cut-in” . B-side Tedesco and Pitman mentions the names of two guitarists from the Wrecking Crew who participated in the recording.
