Hal Blaine (1995)

Hal Blaine (* February 5, 1929 as Chaim Zalmon Belsky in Holyoke , Massachusetts - † March 11, 2019 in Palm Desert , California ) was an American musician. Blaine worked as a drummer for the group of studio musicians called The Wrecking Crew and was one of the most sought-after session musicians of the 1960s.

Life

At the age of 19, Hal Blaine decided to work as a professional studio musician. In the late 1950s he joined the band of the teenage idol Tommy Sands , but left them a few years later to work again as a studio musician in Los Angeles . That decision should herald a golden age for Blaine.

In 1960 he was hired to play the drums on Connie Francis ' song Mama . It was the first Top 10 hit on the Billboard charts that Blaine hit the drums. The following year he played for Elvis Presley ( Can't Help Falling in Love ). This finally helped him achieve a breakthrough. In 1963, a solo concept album for RCA Victor was released as "Hal Blaine (The Drummer Man) & The Young Cougars" with the title Deuces, "T's", Roadsters & Drums, which was thematically based entirely on the musical hot of the time -Rod - and surf - scene was cut (RCA Victor LPM / LSP 2834). In addition to Presley, Dean Martin , Jan & Dean , The Mamas and the Papas , The Byrds , Sonny and Cher , Gary Lewis , Frank Sinatra , Simon & Garfunkel and Jon Mark were among his regular customers. Blaine has also been featured on numerous Beach Boys albums . In the field of jazz he was involved in 32 recording sessions between 1960 and 2004, including a. with Irene Kral , Herb Alpert , Gene Norman , Frankie Randall / Billy May , June Christy , Howard Roberts , Gerry Mulligan , Steve Allen / Terry Gibbs , Tutti Camarata , Bud Shank , Nancy Wilson / Oliver Nelson , Shorty Rogers , Chet Baker and Ahmad Jamal .

For hit producers like Brian Wilson and Phil Spector , Blaine was indispensable.

Blaine has played on more hit singles than any other drummer in rock history. His discography includes 40 No. 1 singles, 150 top 10 singles, and 35,000 songs he was featured on.

In the mid-1970s, all was quiet around Blaine. The orders fell, because not only he - his regular customers had also grown older.

In March 2000, Blaine was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . In 2016, Rolling Stone listed him as fifth of the 100 best drummers of all time .

Hal Blaine died on March 11, 2019 at the age of 90.
