The Cascades was an American doo-wop musical group based in San Diego that existed from 1962 to 1975.

history

The Cascades have their origins in the musical group The Silver Strands, which had their first appearances in San Diego in 1960. She later called herself The Thundernotes, manager and lead singer was guitarist John Gummoe. After the group had released some neglected records by 1961, they signed a contract with the record company Valiant Records, a subcontractor of Warner Bros. In 1962, with the cast John Gummoe (lead singer and guitarist), Eddy Snyder (keyboard), Dave Stevens (bass) , Dave Wilson (saxophone) and Dave Zabo (drums) she took the name The Cascades and released a single in the summer of 1962 called There's a Reason / Second Chance .

While this record only received regional attention, the second Cascades release was already a great success. In the fall of 1962, the single Rhythm of the Rain / Let Me Be was recorded under the direction of producer Phil Spector in the Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles . After its publication in November 1962, the title Rhythm of the Rain started on the Billboard Hot 100 on January 12, 1963 and reached its top listing on March 9 with rank 3. Overall, the song composed and written by lead singer John Gummoe was in the Hot 100 for 16 weeks. Rhythm of the Rain also became a hit internationally . In Great Britain it was ranked 5th, in Canada 1st and in New Zealand it was ranked 2nd. It was the only great success of the Cascades. In 1962, three more titles appeared in the Hot 100, of which The Last Leaf received the best rating with place 60. After that, with Maybe the Rain Will Fall, a Cascade title only returned to the US hit lists in 1969 (61st on Hot 100).

During 1963 Tony Grasso became the new bassist and Roy Lynch took over the keyboard. After three single releases and the long-playing record Rhythm of the Rain (catalog number 405) with Valiant, The Cascades switched to the RCA record company in the summer of 1963 . Of the four singles produced until 1964, only the track For Your Sweet Love was reasonably successful (86th place on Hot 100). After the contract with RCA had expired in the course of 1964, the Cascades changed record companies in quick succession until 1969, without any measurable success. John Gummoe left the group in 1967 after a long illness and embarked on a solo career. From 1968 the group played in the cast Gabe Lapano, Tony Grasso, Eddy Snyder and Dave Wilson. The long-playing record What Goes On Inside was released in-house. In 1969 a two-year contract with UNI Records was signed, under which four singles and the long-playing record Maybe the Rain Will Fall were released. During this time the Cascades began to go on tour more and more. In addition to a major US tour, they performed several times in front of US soldiers stationed abroad. During a North Atlantic tour they came to Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland and Labrador.

In February 1970 Gabe Lapano and in November 1974 Tony Grasso left the Cascades. The end of the group came in 1975.
