The Sandpipers
The Sandpipers was an American folk - pop trio who had a number of easy listening hits in the second half of the 1960s . The group was characterized by airy, light harmonies that floated over delicate string arrangements and a wordless, female accompanying voice that drifted in and out of the music.
history
All members were from the Mitchell Boys Coir from Los Angeles . In the early 1960s they formed the band The Grads and recorded a number of records, but they were all unsuccessful. Then they were signed by Herb Alpert , and in mid-1966 they had their biggest hit with their version of the Cuban song Guantanamera . I was able to place the song in the top 10 of the singles charts in both the USA and Great Britain and it was her only success in Germany. Hal Blaine accompanied the band on the drums . In the following years, two albums in Spanish were released: Spanish Album (1969) and Spanish Album Volume 2 (1970).
The trio had another hit in 1970 with the song Come Saturday Morning , which they recorded for the feature film The Sterile Cuckoo with Liza Minnelli . After a few years without a new LP, the comeback album Overdue was released in 1977 , which, however, had no great success. Ay, Ay, Ay, Manila was released exclusively in the Philippines in the same year ! which was marketed with the addition "the first Tagalog album by an international group".
Although there were no chart successes in the following years, the band continued to tour larger concert halls all over America for years.
