Gas Protection Unit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The English term Gas Protection Unit ( GPU ) describes a combination of technical units and equipment in ATMs for explosion protection, which is aimed against criminal attacks by introducing flammable gases or vapors and detonating them remotely .

GPUs usually not only consist of a gas sensor that triggers a silent alarm , but can also neutralize gases that have been introduced by releasing chemical substances that at least make a gas explosion more difficult - even over a longer period of time.

10 euro notes made unusable with red paint from a break-in in an ATM.

GPU systems are supplemented by structural measures; this is how cavities in ATMs are sealed with assembly foam . Since less gas can be introduced into the interior in this way, the potential explosive effect is considerably reduced. In combination with grid systems, the money is retained in the machine; Money staining cash boxes also make the money unusable.

Newer machines have also changed their design. They have defined explosion exit points or other construction properties so that the devices can no longer be completely torn apart by an internal explosion.

GPU systems are installed not only to protect the ATMs and the large sums of money they contain, but also to avoid the secondary risks: ATM explosions cause high levels of primary and secondary damage. If the blast gets out of control, endangering third parties (residents, passers-by, emergency personnel, etc.) cannot be ruled out. The downtime to reinstall the ATM can be significant. In addition, the image of the bank is damaged.

No official number is currently known about the spread of GPU systems, as existing ATMs can also be retrofitted. Julia Topaz, spokeswoman for the Federal Association of German Banks , considers the 100 explosions that occurred within 5 years up to the end of 2011 to be a negligible number in view of over 60,000 ATMs in Germany.
