Francisco Manso

Francisco Manuel Manso Gonçalves de Faria (born November 28, 1949 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese director.

Life

1976 to 1997

In addition to studying law at the University of Lisbon , he studied film at Ar.Co (graduated in 1976). 1979/80 he completed courses in sound engineering and assistant director at the public television service RTP .

In 1978 he was first assistant director for O Meu Nome É ... (German: My name is ..., by Fernando Matos Silva ), followed by O Príncipe com Orelhas de Burro (German: The Prince with Donkey Ears , directed by António de Macedo , 1979), Acto dos Feitos da Guiné (German: The deeds of Guinea-Bissau, by Fernando Matos Silva, 1980) and Guerra no Mirandum (German: War in the Mirandum, by Fernando Matos Silva, 1981).

His first directorial work was in 1983 the multi-part TV documentary A Epopeia dos Bacalhaus (German: The Epos of the Stockfish), from which he also cut his first feature film, Terra Nova, Mar Velho (German: New Land [port. For Newfoundland ], Old Sea). A series of documentaries followed, but also commissioned works for state educational institutions and companies. He became an important filmmaker on cultural television in the country, for example with his biopics about Mário de Sá-Carneiro , Soares dos Reis or Antero de Quental , for which he was also a producer .

Since 1997

In 1997 he produced O Testamento do Senhor Napomuceno (English: The Testament of Mr Napumoceno), his first feature film for the cinema. On the Cape Verde Islands on the novel by Germano Almeida rotated with actors from Portugal, Brazil and Cape Verde, the film was also distributed internationally. It also screened at various film festivals , where it received several awards, including three awards at the Gramado Film Festival . It was released on DVD in the US in 1998 under the title Testamento . Manso subsequently made other feature films, but also continued his work for television, for example with his multi-part series about Almeida Garrett in 2000.

In his following films he mostly referred to historically relevant events, around 2008 with O Último Condenado à Morte (English: The last condemned to death), which took place at the time of the Liberal Revolution in Portugal (1821/22) and the following Miguelistenkrieg ( 1832–1834) plays. The film, u. a. with Ivo Canelas , Maria João Bastos , Nicolau Breyner and Ângelo Torres , was released on DVD in 2012. Assalto ao Santa Maria from 2010 was a film adaptation of the Santa Maria affair in 1961, based on a script by Vicente Alves do Ó , with Leonor Seixas , Vítor Norte , Bruno Simões u. a. This was followed in 2011 with O Cônsul de Bordéus (German: The Consul of Bordeaux), a film based on the life of Aristides de Sousa Mendes (1885–1954) and his services to humanity during the persecution of the Jews , with Vítor Norte in the lead role . He had on 12 September 2011 in the sold-out Cinematheque of Tel Aviv premiere.

Manso could not repeat his success of O Testamento do Senhor Napumoceno , but has since been considered an established director of Portuguese films .
