Assalto ao Santa Maria (Portuguese for "Assault on Santa Maria") is a Portuguese film by Francisco Manso about the Santa Maria affair in 1961. It premiered on September 23, 2010.
action
Venezuela 1961. The Portuguese Zé Ramos lives better than bad in Caracas . There he met the Portuguese historian and former officer Henrique Galvão , who was planning to overthrow the Salazar dictatorship in Portugal from Venezuela . Galvão has gathered around him some hard-line Portuguese and Spanish supporters , such as the Spanish merchant navy officer Jorge Sottomaior, who are ready to fight the dictatorships in their countries by force of arms. Zé is enthusiastic about Galvão's plan and joins the rebels.
On January 21, 1961, the rebels embarked in La Guaira as passengers on the Portuguese cruise ship N / T Santa Maria , which is on a Caribbean cruise . In the waters around Curacao, the rebels hijack the ship, shooting a crew member who is resisting. Galvão wants to sail with the Santa Maria to the Portuguese colony of Angola in order to trigger a revolution against colonial rule .
Zé falls in love with the passenger Ilda, daughter of a colonel who is closely connected to the Salazar system. Despite the social and political differences, Ilda also falls in love with Zé. Since there are also numerous US passengers on board, the US government under John F. Kennedy intervenes and tries to negotiate with the kidnappers, the Santa Maria is shadowed by US warships and military aircraft . Tensions break out in the hijackers as well as among the passengers about the progress of the company; some crew members are sabotaging to stop the kidnapping.
The kidnapping fails because the Salazar government does not make any concessions and a trip to Angola is excluded due to logistical difficulties. Finally, the Brazilian government grants the kidnappers political asylum and the Santa Maria anchors in a Brazilian port, where passengers can leave the ship after an eleven-day odyssey. Although the revolution failed, a sign of democracy and freedom was set.
Production notes
The shooting took place in Lisbon . As a prop for the Santa Maria served Gil Eannes , a former hospital ship that in Viana do Castelo as a museum ship serves.
