Marcelo Caetano
Marcelo José das Neves Alves Caetano (born August 17, 1906 in Lisbon , † October 26, 1980 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Portuguese politician , lawyer and historian . From 1968 until the Carnation Revolution in 1974 he was Prime Minister of Portugal , and he was several times Colonial Minister and Foreign Minister of Portugal .
Life
Caetano originally studied at the Law Faculty of the University of Lisbon , where he also taught from 1932 to 1962. At the same time, as confidante of the dictator António de Oliveira Salazar, he held posts in the government as Minister for the Colonies and Deputy Prime Minister.
After Salazar suffered a stroke, Caetano was his successor on September 27, 1968. He continued the repressive anti-communist policy and carried on the war in the colonies , which cost up to half of the state budget. In contrast to Salazar, he was a proponent of a harder line against the insurgents in the colonies. He introduced hesitant reforms and allowed Mário Soares and his family to return to Portugal from exile.
Caetano was a comparatively "liberal" representative of the regime and tried to enforce a federal system in the colonies .
On April 25, 1974, he was ousted by the Carnation Revolution and fled into exile, first to Madeira , and later to Brazil . With the end of his rule, the Estado Novo ended and the Third Republic developed in Portugal .
