José Rogério Filipe Samora (born October 28, 1958 in Amadora , Lisbon ) is a Portuguese actor.

Life

He grew up in the Graça district in Lisbon, where he first appeared on stage at the age of five, in the amateur theater Voz do Operário . During elementary school and high school, he appeared repeatedly in amateur theaters, thanks in part to the influence of his grandmother, who was a dance teacher. In 1976 he began studying at the National Conservatory (today Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema ). In 1978 he was an intern and supporting actor with Raul Solnado . In December 1980 he had his first major role in Filipe La Féria's production of René Kalinsky's A Paixão Segundo Pier Paolo Pasolini ( Eng : The Passion according to Pier Paolo Pasolini ) in the Casa da Comédia . A number of stage engagements and first film and television roles followed. In 1986 he got his first leading role in the film, in Matar Saudades (German: To fulfill longings, published in 1988, director: Fernando Lopes ), which was followed by the first major TV role in 1987, in the series Cobárdias (German: cowards ) by Herlânder Peyroteo . Since then he has also appeared in front of the camera in various international productions, especially in France and Spain.

The increasing roles in film and television reduced the number of his theater appearances, which he never gave up entirely. His popularity increased with appearances in a wide variety of television formats, including telenovelas , sitcoms , television plays, theater recordings and youth and children's programs. However, he gave priority to cinema, and it steadily received roles. Especially since his leading role in O Delfim (2002, directed by Fernando Lopes), Samora has been one of the country's top film actors. His portrayal of Delfim , the heir of a wealthy, decadent family dynasty in the outdated Estado Novo regime at the end of the 1960s, was followed by numerous leading roles in works by important directors of Portuguese cinema , including João Botelho and António-Pedro Vasconcelos . But Samora always played and still plays smaller roles, such as his brief appearance as an unwilling actor in The Lovebirds (2007, director: Bruno de Almeida ), or his small and larger supporting roles for old master Manoel de Oliveira .

In 2010 the Festróia film festival dedicated a retrospective to him on the occasion of his 30th stage anniversary.
