Margarida Cardoso

Maria Margarida de Almeida Rodrigues Cardoso (born June 12, 1963 in Tomar ) is a Portuguese film director .

Career

She worked as a commercial photographer since 1981 before taking her first steps in film production. So she was assistant director for João Botelho (in Um Adeus Português , German: A Portuguese Farewell , 1985) and Joaquim Leitão (in Duma Vez Por Todas , German: once and for all , 1987). This was her main field of activity until 1996, for directors such as Charles L. Bitsch (1989), José Fonseca e Costa (1990), Luís Galvão Teles (1991), Alberto Seixas Santos (1992) or Edgar Pêra (1994). She worked regularly for Solveig Nordlund and Joaquim Leitão. She also worked as a make-up and set designer for José Álvaro Morais ( O Bobo 1987), and for filming foreign productions in Portugal, for example at Lola in Technoland .

Starting with the short film Dois Dragões (Eng .: Two Dragons ), she directed herself from 1996. Her film Once Upon a Time in Africa (German festival title: The Coast of Whispers , orig .: A Costa dos Murmúrios , 2004) dealt critically with the Portuguese colonial war . The film adaptation of Lídia Jorge's novel The Coast of Whispers tells the story of a young couple in Mozambique in the late 1960s and received approval from both the audience (among the most successful Portuguese films since 2004) and critics, with awards at the film festivals in Coimbra ( Caminhos do Cinema Português ) and Mannheim-Heidelberg .
