content

The clerk Macário languishes at a young blonde who handles her fan in an incomparable way. He woos her, makes an inaugural visit to her mother, tries to get his rich uncle's consent to marry, all alone: fate prevents him from embracing his lover for the time being. (Daniela Sannwald)

action

“What you don't tell your wife and your best friend, tell a stranger in the pub” is a Galician saying. The hero of the film sticks to it. On his way to the Algarve , he tells a lady who is traveling with him about the great, tragic love of his life. Macário is the name of the young man who works as an accountant for his uncle Francisco in Lisbon and can see the window of a house opposite from the veranda of his office: Here lives a young woman who enjoys standing by the window and uses a Chinese fan to cool herself . Macário immediately falls in love with her. When he sees a friend leaving her house, he establishes contact with the young woman through him. You get closer. The marriage is soon planned. But the uncle forbids them! When Macário insists, he puts the nephew in front of the door.

Macário now ends up on the Cape Verde Islands , where he looks after the business interests of a friend. A rich man he returns to Lisbon, where he plans to marry the unique young girl again. But once again fate thwarted his plans. Once again he should do his friend a favor and now vouch for his enormously high debts. Macário agrees - but a few days later, the “friend” and all of his assets fled abroad. Again the marriage seems to be a long way off ...

criticism

“Oliveira stages the trials and tribulations of the Macário in dignified darkness and muted colors. Gentlemen greet women by removing their hats. Sellers act between cherry wood shelves full of precious balls of fabric. At evening parties, the illustrious guests turn in front of gold-plated mirrors in the shine of multi-armed candlesticks. The ambience counts. Whether the end is to be understood as banal or ironic, socially critical or mysterious, on the other hand less. "
