Johannes Kreuzlinger (* before 1450 in Konstanz , † after 1507 probably in Konstanz, also known under the name Creutzlinger, Crützlinger, Crutzlinger ) was a German legal scholar. He was one of the first law professors at the University of Tübingen , which was founded in 1477 , was its rector in the winter semester of 1480/1481 and entered the service of the Bishop of Constance in 1486 at the latest .

Life

Kreuzlinger came from a merchant family who owned a large fortune in Constance. In the winter semester 1462/1463 he began his university studies at the artist faculty in Leipzig when he was at least 12 years old, which he completed there in the winter semester 1468/1469 with a doctorate. When he enrolled in the summer semester of 1478 at the University of Tübingen, which was founded in the previous year, he held the title of a doctor in ecclesiastical and secular law ( doctor utriusque iuris ), which was still relatively rare at that time Studied law abroad, presumably in Italy or France. With the dominance of doctorates only in canon law, he filled a gap in the courses offered by the Tübingen Faculty of Law in secular (imperial) law. He was elected to the post of rector of the university in the winter semester of 1480/1481 and was still among the so-called representatives of the university and thus among the teaching doctors in 1484.

In 1486 at the latest he switched to the service of the Bishop of Constance. As deputy general vicar and then as an official in the context of spiritual jurisdiction, he was one of the leading lawyers of the Bishop of Constance. Since the offices of vicar general and official in Konstanz were usually only occupied for a relatively short time, rarely more than five years, he has only appeared there as a lawyer and procurator since around 1495 . His house in Konstanz was still listed under his name in the city tax lists in 1500. In 1505 he bequeathed his library to the Constance Cathedral Foundation, subject to the reservation of further usage rights. For this he received a personal thing of 10 guilders. The date of his death is unknown.
